Automobile industry is a fast growing industry in India. Ashok Leyland is a trend setter in commercial vehicle manufacturing sector. The headquarters of the company is located in Chennai, India. They are manufacturing many vehicles such as trucks and buses, both for commercial and military purpose. They also produce spare parts for vehicles.
The company was organized in 1948, which was known as Ashok Motors in the early days. The main job of this company was to assemble Austin cars. Later on, in the 1950s the company tied up with Leyland Motors and entered into vehicle manufacturing. One of the early products of the company was a passenger bus, named as Leyland Comet. This bus was purchased by Delhi Road Transport Authority, Ahmedabad Municipality, Hyderabad Road Transport, Travancore State Transport and Bombay State Transport. First Double Decker bus was manufactured by the company in 1967.In 1968, production of Leyland bus was stopped for a while in England, but it was started again by Ashok Leyland. One of the important features of this company is trustworthiness. They had incorporated with Hino Motors which was a Japan Based company; they provided H-series engines for the Leyland group. Many H-series engines with 4 and 6 cylinders were produced by the company. In 1987, Ashok Leyland was taken over by Hinduja Group and IVECO Fiat on partnership terms. Then they started manufacturing trucks with factory-fitted cabs. They were able to achieve ISO 9002 certification in1993.
Mr. Dheeraj G. Hinduja is the chairman of the company. He is a graduate in Economics and History and obtained his graduation from University College, London.
Dr. V.Sumantran is the Non-Executive Vice Chairman of Hinduja Autombile. He worked as a leader for the group’s expansion.
Executive Director of Hinduja Group, Mr. A.R. Chandrasekharan did his B.com in Kolkata University and graduated in law. He joined the successful venture of the team in 1982 as the Manager.
Mr. Anup Bhat was selected as the Executive Director of the company in 2000.
This is the leading heavy vehicle manufacturers in India. They were capable of carrying about 70 million passengers to their target safely. Some of the products of the company include buses, trucks, light vehicle, defense vehicle and power solutions. They produce different types of trucks, meant for different purposes like Long haul, Mining and construction and Distribution purpose. So based on the purposes they have introduced U-trucks and AVIA trucks. The U-trucks consist of large tractor, tippers and trailers while AVIA trucks include trucks which deliver more performance. Light vehicles like DOST were made to carry small loads. By building trucks for Indian defense, Ashok Leyland has shown its presence in every field.
Yearly, hundreds of Engineering Graduate and Management students are selected by Ashok Leyland through campus selection programs. Many experienced members of the team were always there to look after the performance of the newly joined workers. They also conduct summer internship for the pre-final year students representing different colleges.
